      Description

Add ability for a FITS image to be drawn on a HiPS Image.  For example, a 1000 arcsec WISE cutout of M81 being draw on a WISE HiPS display. In this case several thing should happen.

      • The image visibility and opacity should be controlled in the layer just the same as mask.
      • There should be a flux readout in the layer control.

Further work, each in separate tickets

      • Color and stretch buttons for that image layer should  be in the layer control.
      • The should a way to select an image to overlay on a HiPS.

This ticket provides for the core work to be done.  Mostly of the UI work would be in a separate tickets and should go though some design with scientist before the work is started.

This is blocked by IRSA-1586, waiting to define mapping between hips maps and fits images.

I don't think that IRSA-1586 is really a blocker for the work envisioned in this ticket, which I thought was the general ability to draw a FITS image in context over a HiPS image.  At API level it should be possible to do this for any such pair.  As Trey Roby said, "this ticket provides for the core work to be done".

Although the detailed content of the maps to direct the zoom from HiPS to FITS, and FITS to HiPS does not stop the development work.  We do want to have a short list first to see the result. The content can be refined/modifed during testing.

This request was suspended due to the "Portal freeze" in 2019-2021.

It remains of interest in the Rubin Portal Aspect design, but at a relatively low priority for now.

It's shadowed on the IPAC Jira system as https://jira.ipac.caltech.edu/browse/FIREFLY-944 .

Added to the "suit-good-ideas" epic, DM-10570, which is the holding bucket for unscheduled Portal work.
