      Description

After a catalog is searched, the positions are overplotted on a a coverage image. In the past, we could only choose between a variety of FITS cutouts and an Aitoff projection. In the current version of Firefly, HiPS maps have been added to the mix. Here are some changes that should be made with respect to that implementation:

      1. The default small scale coverage image source is WISE Band 4. This should be changed to 2MASS K-band.
      2. The FITS image label should include the mission, band, and FOV. (Right now it just says "Coverage".)
      3. The default medium scale coverage image source is a DSS color HiPS map. This should be changed to a 2MASS color HiPS map.
      4. The default all-sky coverage map source is DIRBE. This should be changed to a color 2MASS Aitoff map.
      5. There should be no automatic transition with zooming-, unless the user checks a new "Auto" checkbox.-
      6. The grey area above the coverage image should have three buttons: "FITS", "HiPS", "Aitoff". The one that is currently being displayed should be highlighted.
      7. Coordinate system frames choice of “EQ J2000” and “Galactic” only appears when “HiPS” data is displayed.
      8. Coordinate system frames choice of “EQ J2000” and “Galactic” only appears when “HiPS” data is displayed.
      9. (Update) The tooltips for each of these three buttons should be:
        • FITS: "Scientific pixel data over limited regions"
        • HiPS: "All-sky multi-resolution picture with spherical projection"
        • Aitoff: "All-Sky single-resolution picture with Aitoff projection"

Update: I've updated the mock-up of the gator coverage panel to get rid of the Auto checkbox, in consultation with Gregory Dubois-Felsmann. (This is because we don't have Auto implemented between HiPS<–>Aitoff, yet. We will solve this problem in the future by providing Aitoff projections in HiPS format.)

            • Change the label of the "Auto" checkbox to "Auto-transition", with tooltip = "Auto-transition between FITS, HiPS, and Aitoff depending on zoom"
            • There should be a standard '' help link next to the "Auto-transition" checkbox.

            A couple of comments:

            1. The Context toolbar is getting crowded.  I don't think we should have a help icon there.  I think it will just look more messy and not add much value.
            2. 'Auto-transition' also is very long for a toolbar.  I propose keeping it 'auto' and using a light border to do grouping so users know it is related.  I attached a screen shot but it is a little  small to tell.  You might need to click on it.

The visuals look good. I can live with "Auto" as long as there's mouseover text.

I am also ok with "Auto" + mouseover.

Looking into Aitoff images, WISE or 2MASS.

About  a 2MASS Aitoff FITS image: I have a query out to Keith Miller on the ICE Team. He is going to check with Tim and Robert. They have made postcards for us showing what we need. Hopefully they have it in the right format.

UPDATE: Robert is sick but will look for the FITS file we need in his archives.

Vandana Desai / Gregory Dubois-Felsmann: Latest version of IRSAViewer for final testing has the hips coverage feature enabled so Gator can be tested once more with the fixes mentioned here https://github.com/Caltech-IPAC/firefly/pull/605 (DM-14157, IRSA-1711, IRSA-1715).
To be tested in https://irsatest.ipac.caltech.edu/irsaviewer and Gator.
