Description

There seem to be a problem with pipe_tasks. I run into it by doing "eups distrib install obs_sdss", pipe_tasks (version 10.0+1) fails. Once it fails I can reproduce it by doing:

cd $EUPS_DIR/../EupsBuildDir/Linux64/pipe_tasks-10.0+1/pipe_tasks-10.0+1
setup -k -r .
./tests/testProcessCcd.py

and it fails with

rocessCcd.measurement: Measuring 167 sources (167 parents, 0 children)

processCcd WARNING: Persisting background models

processCcd: Matching icSource and Source catalogs to propagate flags.

Russell Owen and I tracked this down to the numpy aggregation bug. This has already been fixed on master:

    It turns out that older versions of numpy (1.7.1 at least and

    maybe some newer than that) did not use double precision

    aggregators on single precision arrays.  That doesn't provide

    enough precision to pass the tests.  By requesting the

    output be float64 one can force the aggregation in double

    precision.  This fixes the test.

This doesn't help with Jacek's install, but I understand he's worked around that.

Discussion on dm-users is relevant.

I've confirmed that I see the same error with NumPy 1.7.1; it seems almost certain that this is the root of the problem, unless one of Jacek, Robert or Will were to report that they had seen it with a 1.9.x version. I propose leaving this ticket open for a couple of days to allow them to jump in if so.

The fix for this is not included in a current release, but I have added a note as part of the Known installation issues for v10_0.

There's some discussion on dm-users as to whether the current workaround – forcing the use of numpy.float64 – is the best one. It's easy enough to change; I'll watch the mailing list to see if a consensus emerges.

I've confirmed that I see the same error with NumPy 1.7.1; it seems almost certain that this is the root of the problem, unless one of Jacek, Robert or Will were to report that they had seen it with a 1.9.x version. I propose leaving this ticket open for a couple of days to allow them to jump in if so. The fix for this is not included in a current release, but I have added a note as part of the Known installation issues for v10_0 . There's some discussion on dm-users as to whether the current workaround – forcing the use of numpy.float64 – is the best one. It's easy enough to change; I'll watch the mailing list to see if a consensus emerges.
