Currently defineVisits reads the WCS directly from each raw file, via datastore, and uses camera geometry to work out the bounds of the observation. For S3 storage this is going to require a download of each raw (or at least a part of it). Since the WCS is defined solely from the ICRS tracking ra/dec and the boresight rotation angle, if we stored those values in registry the bounding box could be calculated solely using registry.
