      Description

      As part of Science Pipeline's June 2021 analysis sprint, explore config options in coadd detection involve extra background subtraction steps.

      At present (w_2021_25), our ImSim configurations have:

      • DynamicDetectionTask in use (so we rescale the threshold and background according to sky object statistics);
      • doTempLocalBackground=True, in which we subtract a temporary small-scale background when detecting peaks to reduce detection of noise peaks.
      • doTempWideBackground=True, in which we subtract a temporary medium-scale background when detecting footprints, to keep them from getting too large.
      • reEstimateBackground=False, which means we do not permanently subtract a smaller-scale background on the coadds; the backgrounds used for measurement are those determined back in single-visit processing and just propagated through the coadds.

      On this ticket, try changing these and see what happens, especially the doTemp options, as those are rather unprincipled and they make it harder for downstream users to reason about what our processing as done to the image. But Lee Kelvin is also investigating changing the single-visit detection scale, and it may not really be possible to do either analysis independent of the other.
