Dust on the optical surfaces of the camera and filters cause out-of-focus images that serve to change the measured detector QE.  If this dust is completely static, then this effect is folded into the flat.  If the dust moves, we would like to have a way to correct just this dust change by looking for sharp edges in the flat corrected image.
