Requirements for detection of low surface brightness objects

    Details

    • Team:
      Architecture

      Description

In discussion with Kian-Tat Lim a requirement for binning to detect extended low-surface-brightness objects came up (he reckons this was done for SDSS). However, it doesn't seem to be included in any of our requirements documentation. Please add it.

There's text in LDM-151 to that effect, but I agree it should be in DPDD as well.

PS: I wouldn't explicitly define it as "binning" – that's an implementation choice. The key is the ability to detect (to some reasonable level) low surface brightness objects.

Right: the text in LDM-151 specifically calls it out as "detection on recursively binned coadds", so one of the issues I hope a DPDD update will make clear is whether that's a requirement or an implementation detail.

Who is going to add the relevant text to DPDD? I can add a requirement to DMSR along the lines of

Software shall be provided to allow low surface brightness objects to be detected.

but that's just saying we are able to do it, not that we will do it. I'm uncertain as to how we would decide when such a scheme would be enabled.

Latest version of the DPDD has this text (Section 5.2, item 4), which think is sufficient:

An appropriate algorithm will be run to also detect extended low surface brightness objects (eg., binned detection algorithm from SDSS).

I have created DMS-REQ-0349 to include this requirement and linked it to DPDD.
