            I've had a quick look at the Python 3 situation and there are a couple of issues that need some thought. The first is the buffer problem mentioned earlier. The second is the loose way that bytes and strings are handled so there is some uncertainty over which parts of ingest should really be bytes and where they should be strings and whether the place where that conversion happens is in the right place. I've put some initial patches on this ticket branch.
