We've never really been happy with the new design for the C++ algorithm API, and Perry and Jim have a few ideas to fix this that need to be fleshed out.

Each of the subtasks of this issue will correspond to a different design idea. Ideally, for each one, we'll try to do a nearly-complete conversion of the SdssShape algorithm (as a good example of a complicated algorithm) to see how these ideas work in practice.
