Homogenize level of detail and style in LDM-151 Algorithmic Components

    Details

      Description

Even after DM-8497, there will still be significant differences in subsections of the Algorithmic Components sections written by different authors, in both the level of detail and the degree to which a baseline algorithm is assumed. These will need to be made consistent.

This first requires agreement between stakeholders (Zeljko Ivezic, Robert Lupton, John Swinbank, Simon Krughoff, Jim Bosch) on what the desired style should be.

Jim Bosch how do you want to reach consensus? Do we need to schedule a meeting to work this out?

I think I may be a bit of an outlier in this area. I have mentioned it before, but to reiterate, I am very keen to have at least some algorithm written down in detail so that we have something we can plan in the absence of any advancement in the area. I know others disagree with this point of view.

However, I don't want to overstate my position. I'm happy to follow any decision the group makes.

Here's a proposal to try to keep that while unifying the level of detail in that section: we could spin off the existing detailed single-algorithm descriptions into separate documents (DMTNs?) or appendices, then rewrite those sections to hedge a bit on the exact algorithm selection while referencing those documents. Would that work for you? I'm not suggesting we spend a ton of time prettying up the spun-off tech notes, so maybe that wouldn't be too much work?

In terms of actually making a decision, I think Robert Lupton will represent my opinion, so maybe you and he and Zeljko Ivezic could meet briefly when he visits UW for the commissioning planning? (If that's also acceptable to John Swinbank?)

Jim Bosch spinning things of sounds fine, though I guess we could just reference the original papers at that point. I think the commissioning thing is next week and I'll be out of town, but I could meet remotely.

Conceptually, I am ok with Jim's proposal to go for a less detailed but uniform
description level and relegate detailed descriptions to DMTNs as a way of saving
the existing work. Of course, Robert and I can talk about it next week, too.
