While initial testing have so far not shown an obvious performance regression in pybind11 wrapped code, a thorough test is still required. Perform such a test, preferably with a realistic workload (say ci_hsc or an actual pipeline run).

Note that the scope of this ticket does not include finding the root cause of performance regressions, should they be found.
