Description
We need to define a physical_filter s and a band for when we have no chromatic element in the beam. This is the case for e.g. ComCam in its current configuration at the base centre, and for the LSSTCam when using the CBP.
I propose that the physical_filter be empty and the band be white.
The choice of physical_filter is not all that important, as it can be chosen per-instrument, but band should be common across all cameras.

The contents of the filter wheel (the physical_filter) is clear or empty. I'm looking for a name for the passband, which is more general. For example, both of the HSC filters HSC-I and HSC-I2 have the band i.
Your particular case is unlikely (we'd use a red block, and a clear/empty filter wouldn't be in focus at all wavelengths), but if we did it, I'd make the band something like asteroid.
"empty" as a band to me is a lot more clear as to what is going on. What advantage does "white" have as a band label?
The physical_filter is empty or clear, and they are different. They result in a bandpass which isn't empty, it's unconstrained. So "wide open" or "white" or something describes the transmitted band.
Despite this I could live with empty except that that's taken for the physical_filter.

To my knowledge, we have no requirement that `physical_filter` and `band` not share names. They are different fields in a FilterLabel.

There is no requirement that band and physical filter be different, although it can be easier if that is the case since you can immediately work out which one you are talking about. "white" definitely seems more band-like as a term though. What should we be using for a blank plate? "solid" ?
The DECam solid plate 0.0 0.0 FILTER is a piece of metal in the filter wheel. I think opaque would be a good band name for it.

Robert Lupton you can adopt this RFC when you are ready. The CCB approved it and the implication is that "opaque" was also accepted as a band name. Please create the triggered tickets so that we can update the filter definitions in the obs packages.

Robert Lupton can you please add the Jira tickets that will implement this? DM-28459 seems like a reasonable candidate but I imagine we need one for the other obs packages. It should be a trivial fix.

All instruments now use white/opaque where appropriate.
What if one day we really get white filter (e.g. for hunting asteroids)? Why not "empty"?
